ASN 2009 Year in review and what’s ahead for 2010!

2009 was a great year for ASN!– A few noteworthy achievements from our Annual Review publication (to be released next month) include acquiring our first grants from Arkansas Community Foundation and the USDA National Institute for Food And Agriculture, establishing a part-time Executive Director position, increasing membership by over 40% and decreasing our overhead costs by 70%!

We’re gearing up for an informative and productive 2010. This coming year you can expect Food Club to continue to connect our members with even more local farmers and farm products, and we’ll continue to coordinate local food dinners. Our work with Felder Farm will continue to offer student and teacher support and volunteer opportunities and we’ll begin our summer youth employment, green job training, and community programs. We ‘re also looking forward to working with the Arkansas Renewable Energy Association, the Winrock Institute, the Arkansas Earth Institute and a host of other partner agencies to bring workshops and discussion courses to you.

Last, but not least, what do you want to see from ASN in 2010? Call or email us anytime. (501-837-7959, or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )

Extending THANKS to members, donors, volunteers, and supporters

ASN would like to recognize all of our 2009 supporters, most recently Second Presbyterian Church for their donation to ASN and Felder Farm. We applaud Second Presbyterian Church for their outreach to numerous community initiatives. Felder Farm and ASN also celebrate a recent donation of a greenhouse frame from Little Rock Parks and Recreation. Construction is slated to begin immediately. Got skills and experience to help out? Let us know or email us for a list of materials that we will need to acquire to construct the greenhouse. We were happy to welcome MLK King Challenge Day of Service volunteers to Felder Farm for their incredible energy and assistance planting Felder’s first fruit bearing plants: Arkansas Black Apples and Blueberry bushes! We would also like to correct a misspelled name in our last newsletter and recognize Janet Udouj for her support of ASN.

ASN is Moving!

As part of streamlining our operating costs, we have moved to an office located inside Christ Episcopal Church at the end of this month.  Thanks to the generosity of the church, we will be reducing our set monthly expenditures by over 70%. With this reduction in costs, we’ll be able to channel your support as members and donors into more quality community programming. Our new address is 509 Scott Street, and our new telephone is 501.837.7959. Our email and websites will remain the same.

Felder Program Assistant Position

We are looking for a qualified candidate to assist with implementation of our Community Food Project Grant.  Job duties will be primarily administrative with a portion of time to be spent in the garden and direct services to Felder students and teachers.  This part-time position will remain open for applications until December 20th.  Interviews and hiring will occur in January.  Please email us for an application.

ASN has revamped its Facebook page and is now on Twitter!

Become a fan of our new Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ARsustainability!  We are posting events, news and tips daily about sustainability in Arkansas and we’d love to hear your thoughts on Food Club products—including product reviews—workshop topics and anything else on your mind.  We are also on Twitter: @friendsofasn.  Join the conversation!

Call for Event, Programs and Workshops for 2010

As we set our program calendar for 2010 we welcome workshop suggestions and input from you. Is there a class that you want to teach or that you would like to attend? If so, let us know! As our director begins her journey as a new mother, she hopes to coordinate a workshop on cloth diapering, other “green mom”-oriented workshops, and a discussion course from Arkansas Earth Institute on the theme of, “Healthy Children, Healthy Planet.”  We will also continue farmer and food-themed dinners, youth programming, more discussion courses and workshops, and pursue new partnerships, while continuing weekly Local Food Club and Felder Farm activities. What do you want to see from ASN in 2010?

Food Club Refer-A-Friend Campaign

It’s Fall—the leaves are turning, the wind is blowing and the Farmers’ Markets are closing down. Many people think they will have to do without fresh local food until next summer—but you know better, because you know about ASN’s Food Club. Help us spread the word about Food Club and for each person you refer who becomes a member, you’ll earn a free month’s membership!

We’ll make it easy for you: just cut and paste the invitation below and email it to everyone you know who likes fresh produce and pasture raised meats from farmers who live where you live. Thanks for helping us grow ASN Food Club—Little Rock’s best source for local food.

Friends,

We all love the fresh local food from our Farmers Markets every summer. Did you know that you can enjoy that great food all year long? Just join me in the ASN Food Club. Food Club is a local food cooperative run by the nonprofit Arkansas Sustainability Network that will give you access to an incredible variety of produce, meats, herbs, eggs, and more—all produced by Arkansas farmers—for just pennies a day. This week, we had pasture raised chicken from Falling Sky Farms, grass fed meats from Farm Girl Natural Foods and Petit Jean Farm, fresh vegetables from a variety of local farms, free range eggs from Bluebird Hill Berry Farm and hundreds of other Arkansas products.

It’s easy too. Just put in your order at the online market, anytime between Sunday evening and Tuesday evening each week, and relax while Food Club volunteers gather up your order. Then pick it up on Saturday morning between 10-12, at Christ Episcopal Church at 6th and Scott in downtown Little Rock.

Membership costs just $5 a month and your first two orders are free. To join, go to littlerock.locallygrown.net,
click on “Your Account”, and choose “I want to create a new account.” Follow the easy instructions and you’ll be ready to go.

Have questions? Email ASN Food Club or call (501) 837-7959.

Tips for a Simple Holiday Season

As the holiday season sets in, remember to keep it simple.  The Center for a New American Dream offers tons of tips and advice for simplifying the holidays.  http://www.newdream.org/holiday/  For unique local and green gift ideas consider the following local options:

The Green Corner Store, Box Turtle, It’s All Green and More, River City Tea and Coffee, and many other locally-owned stores stock green gifts. And why not visit the many local thrift shops and flea markets for resale, one-of-kind gifts? (Contact us for contact info for these local spots.)

Gift Certificates to locally owned restaurants make great gifts, and many Little Rock restaurants are going green as part of the Arkansas Green Restaurant Alliance/Central Arkansas Sustainable Business Network (http://www.sbnca.org/).

Heifer International (http://www.heifer.org/) and other charity organizations such as KIVA (http://www.kiva.org/) offer charitable, non-material gift options. Last but not least, support Arkansas farmers and food agencies by purchasing gift baskets and other select Arkansas-made products.
